Canadian Federal Skilled Worker Program

Overview
Canadian Government selects professionals and skilled workers from all over the world as permanent residents based on their ability to settle in Canada and contribute to Canada's economy. There are assessed on  their:
  •     English and/or French skills,
  •     education,
  •     work experience, and
  •     other factors such as spouse's language skills and presence of a close relative in Canada, that have been shown to help them prosper in Canada.

A) Basic eligibility

Applicants need to have at least one year of full-time, continuous and paid work experience in am occupation that is eligible for processing. Only the experience falling in the preceding 10 years is taken into consideration OR

they need to have a valid offer of arranged employment, OR

they are an international student who is enrolled in a PhD program in Canada (or who graduated from a Canadian PhD program within the past 12 months) and meet these criteria.

B) Minimum requirements
 

Work experience
Once it is determined that your application is eligible to be processed, it will then be assessed for the validity of work your work experience.  

Your work experience must be:
  •     for at least one year in the same occupation,
  •     continuous and paid (full-time or an equal amount in part-time),
  •     within the last 10 years,
AND
   
  •     skill type 0 (managerial occupations) or
  •     skill level A (professional occupations) or
  •     skill level B (technical occupations and skilled trades)
  •     on the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC) list.

Following 50 occupations are eligible for processing currently. You must have at least one year of continuous, full-time (or an equal amount of part-time) paid work experience, in at least one of these occupations within the last ten years. Effective May 1, 2014, CIC will consider only 25,000 applications for processing. Within the 25,000 cap, only 1,000 applications per eligible occupation will be considered for processing within this same time frame.
​This does not apply if the applicant possess a valid offer of arranged employment, or if they  are applying under the PhD stream.

Language Skills
Language is being given the highest importance in the new skilled worker program. The minimum language level required is IELTS 6 in EACH skill on the IELTS test. You must meet minimum language levels and include the results of a language test from an agency approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) when you apply that shows you meet the minimum language requirement of Canadian Language Benchmark.
 
Education

You must have:
  •     a Canadian diploma, certificate, or credential
    AND/OR
   
  •     a foreign educational credential, and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) by an agency approved by CIC to show it is equal to a completed Canadian secondary or post-secondary educational credential.
C) Six selection factors

If the applicant meets the work experience, language and educational requirements as described above, the processing officer then assess the application on the six selection factors in the skilled worker points grid
They six selection factors are:
   
    your skills in English and/or French, Canada’s two official languages - Maximum 28 points
    your education - Maximum 25 points
    your work experience - Maximum 15 points
    your age - Maximum 12 points
    whether you have arranged employment in Canada, and
    your adaptability (how well you are likely to settle here) - maximum 5 points

D) Proof of funds

Since Canadian government does not provide financial support to newcomers, you must also show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family after you arrive in Canada. Read how much would you need to bring to Canada here..
 
E) Inadmissibility

Some people are inadmissible—they are not allowed to come to Canada. Several things can make you inadmissible, including being involved in:
   
     crime, or
    human rights violations.
You can also be inadmissible for:
    security,
    health,
    financial reasons, or
    other reasons.
