PARVEEN SHAKIR
Raakh ke dhair mein shouloon ko daba rakha hai...
Raas aaye na kabhi pyar ke halaat humein
Dil ki is khail mein har baar huwi maat humein
Kya kahenge kahaan jaayenge kidhar jaayenge
De gaee jab bhi zara dard yeh mulaqaat humein
Bas issi soch ne deewaana bana rakha hai
Raakh ke dhair mein shouloon ko daba rakha hai...
Hum ne socha tu bahut kuch thaa huwa kuch bhi nahee
Dil tu be-taab thaa dilbar ne kaha kuch bhi nahee
Raakh ke dhair mein shouloon ko daba rakha hai...
Aisa lagta hai ke weerane mein barsaat huwi
Warne hum ne tu yunhi khud ko bhula rakha thaa
Raakh ke dhair mein shouloon ko daba rakha hai...
Hum ne jo khwaab sajaaye woh humein maar gaye
Hum ne is paar rahe aur na us paar gaye
Do qadam per hi thee manzil per qadam haar gaye

In Brazil, the Poorer the Better for the Rich
In Brazil, the Poorer the Better for the Rich
Brazil is a very class conscious culture. The majority of politicians
and the elite in control have little desire to change the lives of
the poor. The lower class is viewed as a source of affordable
domestic labor. Street children are seen as nuisances and favelas
as crime areas which should be left to the police to deal with.
Jennifer Grant
If there are so many poor people in Brazil, how can they afford to buy things?
In stores in Rio many items are marked with two prices. The first one is the cost of the item if you pay the entire purchase price up front. The second is a credit-plan amount which specifies both the payment price and number of premiums needed to own the product. It also lets you know if interest must be included in the payments.
Between a Saint and a Sinner in Laguna, Brazil
Between a Saint and a Sinner in Laguna, Brazil
Brazil never felt more like Spain or Italy. At the present time in Brazil,
evangelical Protestantism is making deep inroads into Catholicism.
Everybody seems excited and amused. A local man tells a miraculous
story about a sixty year-old retired teacher who had rather suddenly
gotten married. "The real miracle was that she was a virgin."
Terry Caesar
"The saint is coming!" This would be Santo Antônio, whose image was being returned to the church where it resides 364 days of the year. Only on his feast day, June 13, does the saint leave his home, to be kept at another church (it varies each year) until nightfall.
In Brazil, It's Three Beers or Your Life
In Brazil, It's Three Beers or Your Life
Bribe fishing, is nothing new in Brazil, having been incorporated
into Brazilian culture decades if not centuries ago. Things are
getting worse, however. Being honest and not choosing to play
the corruption game can endanger the life of anyone who defies
the "system". The bribery industry is installed at all levels of society.
Leila Cordeiro
Apart from the eight o'clock TV soap, the topic which most unites people at social gatherings in Brazil's larger cities, especially Rio and São Paulo, is violence.
Everyone has an unpleasant story ready to tell, whether as a first-person victim, or as a relative or friend of someone who has been touched by violence.
