Supporting students in times of loss is less about finding the right words and more about validating what they choose to share.

Grief is universal. It is in the kindergarten classroom when a class pet dies, the sixth grade that reads A Bridge to Terabithia, and the college history seminar in which students and teachers parse texts from the Holocaust. Research suggests that seven out of 10 teachers have a student in their classroom who is bereaved or actively grieving, and teachers carry their own losses too, yet mortality is often left out of discourses surrounding social and emotional learning and teacher training. As a consequence, it can feel daunting to discuss the topic with students.

With the right tools, however, teachers can engage in discussions about love and loss in ways that catalyze powerful learning. Though it’s not teachers’ formal responsibility to tackle these subjects in their classrooms or to provide emotional support to students who are grieving, the following suggestions and resources

To succeed in school, students need to be able to focus, control their emotions, and adjust to change.

PROVIDE STRUCTURE AND TOOLS FOR LEARNING

Teachers can set up their classrooms to provide the structure and learning tools necessary to help model and teach self-regulation.

A positive environment: The classroom should feel like a safe space where strengths are emphasized. When a problem behavior occurs, try not to take it personally or immediately correct the child in front of others. Instead, act as an observer with the goal of figuring out why the behavior is occurring. Then address the behavior once the child has cooled down.
Clear expectations: Schedules, procedures, and an established routine help students understand what to expect and create an environment that feels structured and safe.
Instruction on study skills: As teachers, we often focus on the curriculum,

STRATEGIES FOR GETTING TO KNOW YOUR STUDENTS BETTER

1. Stand in the hall between classes. Take a little break to chat with students as they pass by. Smile, say hi, comment on that cute new haircut. Make yourself actually notice the kids. I know it seems like you could get work done at your desk, but really, what can you accomplish in that three minutes?

Standing in the hall outside your door allows you to be seen and chat with students as they walk by. You’ll always find that one tough nut, but I bet if you keep at it, they will greet you before the year is over.

Standing in the hall also lets you welcome your kids to your room every day, and it’s wonderful for them to enter a place where someone is glad to see them.

This is also the first step in making your class a safe and welcoming place. Don’t stand for bullying or belittling of anyone for any reason. Don’t do it yourself, and stop it if you see it.

2. Advise a club or open your room for study sessions. Coaching a sport is one way to interact with students outside of class, but it’s far from the only way. If there aren’t any clubs in need of an advisor, ask your students if there’s anything

In my mind, the first and most basic obligation of a teacher is to see the beauty that exists within every student. Every child is infinitely precious. Period.

When we start from this vantage point, classroom management -- and its flip side, student engagement -- comes more easily. It's an outgrowth of students feeling loved and respected.

This video, shot in the first few days of my classroom, and the seven tips below will show how I try to put these ideas into practice.

1. LOVE YOUR STUDENTS

Love them -- and stand firmly against behavior that doesn't meet your expectations or reflect their inner greatness. Too many students have internalized a profound sense of their own inadequacy, and it is incumbent upon us to remind them of their infinite value and counteract the many messages that they receive to the contrary. By loving our students unconditionally, we remind them of their true worth.

Our students know how we feel about them. If we don't like them -- or if we see them as a behavior problem -- they know it. Even if we don't say it, they will know it. And then that student is justified in resenting us, for we have failed to see the beauty that exists within that child. Maya Angelou said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

2. ASSUME THE BEST IN YOUR STUDENTS
