Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains, Michigan, USA

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park covers roughly 60,000 acres of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Here you'll find what's said to be North America's largest old-growth hardwood forest west of the Adirondack Mountains. A healthy population of black bears call this place home, along with – yes – porcupines. Set like a jewel atop this crown of nature, Lake of the Clouds more than earns its name. The glimmering blue water spreads across 133 acres of a high, wide mountain valley. Picturesque in any season, our image shows the burnished touch of autumn.
